Tulane has reviewed the Microsoft Surface product line, and strongly recommends that faculty and staff choose from one of these recommended standards for the following reasons:
- For the vast majority of our faculty and staff, these machines will completely fill the computing needs for the next three years.
- We generally have these computers available. Often these computers will arrive with 1 to 2 days after your IT is processed. Other configurations will have to special ordered, and can be delayed by days or weeks depending on availability.
- The computers have been tested by our IT staff to assure that they are compatible with Tulane’s infrastructure and security needs.
- These computers include a 3-year warranty with some accidental damage coverage. The University has determined that this is a very valuable tool in managing your computer needs and budget.
- Buying power gives us great value with these particular models, and we want to be good stewards of Tulane’s funding.
If you have unusual computing requirements, and believe that you can justify having non-standard computing configurations, you may request an exception and purchase non-standard computers. Information on how to do so is listed below.
Our standard configuration for computing in a machine with an i5 process, 8GB of RAM, and a 256GB SSD.

PROCESS FOR REQUESTING A NON STANDARD COMPUTER.
Before you request one these systems, you should be advised of these factors:
- These systems are all ordered as needed, so delivery of your computer may be delayed by 1 to 3 weeks.
- i7 processor reduces battery life by 20% to 40% depending on multiple factors.
- i7 processor generates additional heat which will put more strain on your computer and your lap.
- These systems have an increased cost of acquistion.
